MEMBERSHIP BRUNCH

The IHSPA membership meeting and brunch is held on the Franklin College campus and gathers high school journalism advisers and editors from all Indiana student media outlets. The day begins with a meal and keynote presentation focusing on the issues currently relevant to scholastic journalism. It is immediately followed by a ceremony to name the Hoosier Star, Dr. Louis Ingelhart Friend of the High School Press, and IHSPA Lifetime Membership award winners. Attendees then participate in a membership meeting that features IHSPA Executive Board elections, professional development, leadership training, and personal celebrations. This event is limited to 10 participants per school. Any businesses or organizations wishing to participate in the event should complete the exhibitor/sponsor form and submit it before Oct. 15.

INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM CONVENTION

The IHSPA convention is another event held annually on the Franklin College campus, and it features educational programming related to all activities within student media for both students and their advisers. The day begins with a keynote presentation that is then followed by the recognition of the Rowena Harvey contest, Indiana Administrator of the Year, and Ella Sengenberger Adviser of the Year award winners. For the remainder of the day, participants attend a wide variety of sessions specifically designed to address their activities and interests in scholastic journalism. Lunch is also available for those who wish to purchase it. Any businesses or organizations wishing to participate in the event should complete the exhibitor/sponsor form and submit it before Jan. 7.

FIRST AMENDMENT SYMPOSIUM

The First Amendment Symposium is held annually at the Indiana Statehouse in the spring. This event is meant to educate those in attendance about First Amendment freedoms as well as promote them and emphasize their importance not only for society, but for journalists specifically. Each year at this event, there is a keynote speaker, and all members of the IHSPA student board share a few words about the significance of the First Amendment and its impact on Indiana student media. The Indiana High School Journalist of the Year is announced, along with the winners of the spring contests.

Registration is not required for the First Amendment Symposium.
