Dear IHSPA Friends,
I invite you to join us at our 2019 State Journalism Convention. Our theme this year is “Challenge Accepted,” and I would like to challenge you and your students to join us as we learn new ways to take on the challenges that face student journalists and advisers. We hope that the young people who attend our convention will feel empowered to go back to their schools and practice journalism with courage, truth, integrity, and freedom.

I’m thrilled that we will have Jon Seidel of the Chicago Sun-Times as our keynote speaker. Twenty years ago, he served as our student board president, and now he’s returning to his roots to offer wisdom as somebody who has been there in high school, college, and the professional world. When we pair up Jon’s professional experience with featured speaker Mitch Eden’s outstanding teaching career at Kirkwood (Mo.) High School, I think our convention attendees are in for a great experience.

7:30 a.m. – 8:20 a.m. – Registration, Spurlock Center Lobby
8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. – Keynote and Awards, Spurlock Gym
10:15 a.m. – 11 a.m. – Breakout Sessions 1
11:15 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Breakout Sessions 2
12:15 p.m. – 1 p.m. – Breakout Sessions 3
1:15 p.m. – 2 p.m. – Breakout Sessions 4

Lunch: Students eat at the Napolitan Student Center Café during the second or third breakout sessions. Lunch is included in the registration fee. Advisers may join us for the business meeting at 11:15 a.m. in the student center Branigan Room as well as the luncheon that immediately follows. If you are a new adviser, this is a great way to meet other advisers from all over Indiana.
Exhibitors: Representatives from schools of journalism and organizations that support high school student media will be stationed in the atrium of the Napolitan Student Center throughout the day. We hope that you and your students take advantage of this opportunity to network with some of the best in the field.
