IBM Social Media Manager Carrie Ritchie

Thursday Featured Speaker
Carrie Ritchie is a former student journalist from Bloomington, Indiana where she contributed to The Optimist at Bloomington HS South and the Indiana Daily Student at Indiana University. Ritchie graduated from IU with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in May 2008 and immediately went to work as a reporter for The Indianapolis Star, where she covered several high-profile elections and court cases. Covering courts and politics helped her develop a love of social media, and in 2013, she became The Star’s social media editor. In 2014, Ritchie left The Star to become a social business manager for IBM and an adjunct lecturer at IU, where she teaches a class called “Social Media in the Newsroom.” Writing is still her first love, and she continues to freelance for a variety of publications. She also shares her social expertise with newsrooms, classrooms and conferences all over the state. On Thursday evening, Ritchie will present those skills and habits vital to a successful social media presence and help lead the social media on-site contests that night.

State Representative Ed Clere

Friday Featured Speaker
State Representative Ed Clere has served in the House since 2008 and represents most of Floyd County where he and his wife, Amy, live with their five children. A former student journalist himself, he is a strong supporter of Indiana scholastic journalism, and co-authored HB 1130, Protections for Student Journalists, with fellow state representative Ed Delaney for the previous legislative session. He was ever present throughout each step of the bill’s development and tirelessly advocated for the freedoms of Hoosier student journalists and advisers. While HB 1130 passed through the House 88-4, it stalled in the Senate and was not called for a vote before the end of the session. However, Rep. Clere is not giving up and has already agreed to re-introduce the legislation for 2018. To ensure Indiana becomes a #NewVoices state in 2018, Rep. Clere will be speaking with IHSPA convention attendees about their vital role in defeating Hazelwood and how they can #BeHeard for the future of the First Amendment.
