First Amendment Symposium

IHSPA student officers display Mary Beth Tinker’s more comical First Amendment shirts that coincide with their speech topics: Lauren Lecy, Chesterton High School (Speech); Ashley Shuler, Ben Davis High School (Petition); Nike Jordan, Portage High School (Assembly); Michelle Roberts, Greenwood High School (Religion); and Carley Lanich, Lawrence Central High School (Press). When keynote speaker Mary Beth Tinker and Mark Tague, Carmel High School, realize that the person who provides the introduction to the evening doesn’t get a shirt they encourage Carley Lanich to share Freedom of the Press. Tinker, the popular icon of student expression, inspired students to “stand up and speak up” and stayed after the event to talk to students who wanted to meet her.

At the First Amendment Symposium on Wednesday, the student journalist of the year finalists were recognized, along with various other award winners.

Carly Lanich and Ashley Shuler–student journalist of the year finalists–were also awarded $1500 scholarships from the Hoosier State Press Association.
